The new year is always a good time to perform a mini HR check-up and take care of the following items for your business. 2012 HR Checklist:

Handbook Update - As a general best practice, it is wise to update your employee handbook at the beginning of each year. Be sure to include any recent law changes or updates that may have taken place and affect your business. 

OSHA Logs - All OSHA logs are due to be posted by February 1st. Not all businesses are subject to required OSHA logs. We can help you determine if this is needed for your business.

E-Verify Registration - This new law was enacted in Georgia in May of 2011. Those of you that have more than 500 or more full time employees became subject to this law as of January 1, 2012. We can assist you in the enrollment process so that you remain in compliance with this law. Please see the article below for more information.

Personnel File Check-up - Another good practice is to go through your personnel files at the beginning of the year. You will want to ensure that you have files separated properly and in good order. An area of great scrutiny recently is employee I-9's. Please be sure you are using the correct I-9's and properly filling them out. This is also a good time to thin personnel files by removing information that you are no longer required to keep on file.


There are many other HR related items that you may want to consider addressing at the beginning of the year. Maybe you have been considering undergoing some additional training for yourself or your staff? You might have been thinking about designing a new comp plan or making some adjustments to your current plan. A new year provides a fresh start and a good perspective for the future. Georgia’s New Immigration Law and how it Impacts Your Business:
HB 87, enacted May 13, 2011, and known as the Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011, will require private employers with 10 or more full-time employees to use E-Verify to confirm the employment eligibility of new hires. This requirement will be implemented in stages and will be effective on Jan. 1, 2012, for employers with 500 or more full-time employees; on July 1, 2012 for employers with 100 or more full-time (but fewer than 500) employees; and on July 1, 2013 for employers with more than 10 full-time (but fewer than 100) employees.
